“Full House” star Dave Coulier reveals naughty origin of Uncle Joey's last name

''I always thought it was a funny name," he says of the "Gladstone" surname.

Dave Coulier named his most iconic role after a marijuana gag.

In a new episode of his rewatch podcast Full House Rewind, the actor behind Uncle Joey (though, despite popular recollection, he was never actually referred to as "Uncle Joey" on the show) revealed the origin of his character’s last name, Gladstone.

“I got to pick my own last name, did you know that? My character last name,” he said to guest Debra Stipe, who appeared in three episodes of Full House as Cindy. “Yeah, Jeff [Franklin, the series’ creator] said ‘I’m trying to get a last name for your character,’ and I said, ‘How about Gladstone?’ and he laughed and goes, ‘All right, sounds good.’”

Stipe was puzzled about Coulier’s choice. “What was it about Gladstone? Was there a meaning behind it?” she asked.

“I always thought it was a funny name,” Coulier responded. “It was almost like, ‘I’m glad that I’m stoned.’ You know, I’m a comedian, so that was what I thought. And so Jeff laughed, and that was it.”

Coulier also noted that he wasn’t sure how to evaluate his audition for the sitcom because he got mixed messages from ABC producers. At first, he felt confident because of Franklin’s reaction. “I walked in and did my stuff for the character of Joey, and Jeff Franklin knew I was the guy after I read,” he said.

But another producer asked him to return, which led the actor to doubt himself. “Then Tom Miller stopped me on my way out, and Jeff’s got his arm around me, he was walking me out, he goes, ‘Man, that was unbelievable, just great,’ and I’m like, ‘Yeah, okay,’ so then Tom Miller stops me and he goes, ‘Wait a second. I’d like you to read for the father.’”

Coulier assumed that being asked to read for a different character meant that he flubbed the first audition: “I said, ‘I just blew it. That’s it. I didn’t get this, because now they want me to read for the father.’”

It turns out that the producers had had a communication breakdown during the audition process.

“I walked out of that first reading thinking, ‘I didn’t get this,’” Coulier reiterated. “But then, you know, you talk to Jeff, and he goes, ‘No…I was angry at Tom Miller when he said, “Let’s have him read for the father,” because I was like, “I don’t care who else walks in here today, that’s my Joey. That’s my character.”’”
