The full list of all 14 MPs in Merseyside and who they are

The election results are in and we now know exactly who is set to be representing Merseyside in Parliament for the next five years.

Sir Keir Starmer has led the Labour Party to an enormous victory in the general election as Rishi Sunak's Tories have fallen to an all-time worst defeat.

That victory has been won on the backs of places like Merseyside, where there are no MPs of any other persuasion than Labour. The big result for our region came in Southport, where Labour gained the seat from the Tories - the first time they have ever won it in the seaside constituency's history.

Dan Carden comfortably held on to the Liverpool Walton seat in this election, in a result that was never really in doubt.

Mr Carden was first elected to Parliament in 2017 and served on the shadow frontbench a year later as Shadow Secretary of State for International Development. After a promotion to Shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasure in April 2020, he resigned six months later over disagreements regarding the Covert Intelligence Bill.

He is now celebrating a third election win having taken home 70% of the vote in Thursday night's election.

Kim Johnson was the first black woman to be elected as a Labour MP in a Liverpool seat when she first won the Liverpool Riverside constituency in 2019.

She comfortably held on last night after seeing off the challenge of the Green Party in second place. Before becoming an MP, Ms Johnson was a shop steward for the union, Unison. She succeeded long-serving former Labour MP Dame Louise Ellman, who left the party over its handling of anti-semitism but rejoined as a member in 2021.

Before being elected to Parliament for the first time five years ago, Ian Byrne was instrumental in the setting up of Fans Supporting Foodbanks, a community initiative to help tackle food poverty in Liverpool. A former city councillor, Mr Byrne has campaigned for the right to food and free school meals for children across the country, as well as the adoption of a Hillsborough Law.

Mr Byrne faced an internal battle to be selected as the Labour candidate for Liverpool West Derby having lost a number of votes from constituency branches. He won the seat comfortably for a second time on Thursday night.

A former local government official, Mrs Barker is also beginning her second term in Parliament after a resounding win in Liverpool Wavertree. Before entering Parliament, she was the Unison North West Regional Convenor, having worked at Liverpool, Knowsley and Halton councils.

She was appointed Shadow Minister for Homelessness and Rough Sleeping on October 2022 before being moved to the role of Shadow Minister for Devolution and the English Regions. Mrs Barker resigned in November last year to publicly demand a ceasefire in Gaza.

A veteran of the 1997 Labour landslide, Ms Eagle - who serves alongside her twin sister Angela - held a number of government roles under Tony Blair and Gordon Brown. In opposition, the Liverpool Garston MP resigned as part of the party's mass exodus over Brexit and supported Owen Smith in the 2016 Labour leadership contest.

She was appointed a member of the Privy Council in 2023 and will begin her seventh term in Parliament having been comfortably re-elected in Thursday's national ballot.

Angela Eagle

A former Labour leadership hopeful, Angela Eagle was elected to Parliament five before her twin sister in 1992. She was comfortably retained as the MP for Wallasey on Thursday night for an eighth term. Following the Labour landslide in 1997, she became a minister for the first time in the Blair government before being sacked in 2002.

After the party's defeat in 2015 and a vote of no confidence in Jeremy Corbyn a year later, Ms Eagle sought to challenge for the party's top job despite overwhelming opposition from local members. She was appointed a Dame in the 2021 New Year's Honours.

Alison McGovern

A growing figure within the party, Ms McGovern will be hoping to secure a top job in the new Labour government. First elected in 2010 as Labour entered opposition, she spent 14 years as member of parliament for Wirral South, which was abolished in the newly redrawn boundaries.

After an internal contest, she won the backing of members to contest Birkenhead over incumbent MP Mick Whitley. On entering Parliament in 2010, Ms McGovern was appointed then Prime Minister Gordon Brown's Parliamentary Private Secretary and has held a number of positions in the shadow team as Labour entered opposition.

Matthew Patrick has been elected as the new Labour MP for Wirral West, succeeding outgoing Margaret Greenwood. She had held the seat since she flipped it from the Conservatives in 2015.

Mr Patrick, who grew up in Birkenhead, was first elected as a councillor in Upton in 2013 before stepping down from the role in September 2018.

Patrick Hurley

Patrick Hurley became Labour's first ever Member of Parliament for Southport. Mr Hurley defeated Conservative Damien Moore, who has held the seaside seat since 2017.

Anneliese Midgley

Former senior union officer Anneliese Midgley held Knowsley for Labour after the retirement of long-serving MP Sir George Howarth. Ms Midgley, who recently worked for the Trades Union Congress (TUC), beat off competition from ex-Knowsley Council deputy leader Louise Harbour and Ryan Wain of the Tony Blair Institute to contest the safe Labour constituency.

Ms Midgley, who was born in Stockbridge Village, spent time as Unite's political director as well as acting as an advisor to the new Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer.
