Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has handed peerages to Theresa May and the former chairman of the influential Conservative backbench 1922 committee Sir Graham Brady just a matter of minutes before polls closed before the general election.

Previously, when discussing her decision to step back from politics, the former prime minister Theresa May told the Maidenhead Advertiser she had taken the decision to “focus on causes close to her heart."

Liam Booth-Smith has also been rewarded with a peerage in a dissolution honours list announced less than an hour before polls closed in the general election. Booth-Smith ran Sunak’s unsuccessful leadership campaign having previously been his chief of staff during his time at the Treasury, heading the joint economic unit.
