The 2024 general election has seen a number of new MPs elected here in Birmingham. Voters across the country went to the polls on Thursday, July 4, to elect hundreds of Members of Parliament to the House of Commons.

In the hectic early hours of Friday morning, there was a torrent of results for Birmingham areas declared at the ICC in the heart of city centre. Jess Phillips and Shabana Mahmood were among the Labour candidates who successfully kept their seats as both spoke of intimidating scenes during the election.

And over in Sutton Coldfield, Conservative candidate Andrew Mitchell managed to hold on - albeit, with a slashed majority. When it comes to the new MPs, there was an upset as independent candidate Ayoub Khan won the Perry Barr seat with just over 500 votes more than Labour's Khalid Mahmood.

Do you think Keir Starmer will make a good Prime Minister?

Mr Khan said: "I know voting for an independent is sometimes very difficult. It's not an easy thing to do and to the average person, fighting a battle against the Labour machinery is always going to be an uphill struggle.

"But it comes down to, in my view, a few simple matters - justice, fairness and equality."

Elsewhere, Labour managed to gain the Northfield constituency from the Conservatives. Back in 2019, Tory candidate Gary Sambrook won the seat and turned Northfield blue for the first time in 27 years.

It was the only constituency in the city of Birmingham to change party hands during the general election that year. Five years later and Mr Sambrook had to watch on as Laurence Turner, the Labour candidate for Northfield, delivered his victory speech.

“The people of Northfield have voted for change,” he said. “I want to thank everyone who’s voted for Labour and those who did not. I will work hard every day to represent all Northfield’s communities and constituents.

“Many people have voted Labour for the first time. They voted for stability and for better public services locally". Meanwhile Al Carns, a former marine and newcomer to politics, kept the Selly Oak constituency safely in the hands of Labour.

“It’s great to be here to see democracy in action,” he said. “I took part in observing the count, it’s the first time I’ve seen it after 24 years in the military - it’s great to see what I’ve been spending a lot of time protecting.”

He said Labour were going to “move forward delivering change” at both national and local level. We're listening to people and listening to what they require,” he said.
