Seven candidates are up against each other to win the Belfast North seat in the 2024 UK General Election.

Sinn Féin's John Finucane will be hoping to defend the seat he won at the last Westminster election in 2019, beating the DUP's Nigel Dodds who had held the seat since the 2001 General Election.

Belfast North is a constituency with a nationalist majority. Historically, it had a narrow unionist majority, which has decreased over time. Those from a Catholic background (47%) now slightly outnumber those from a Protestant background (46%), according to the 2011 census.

It is one of the most deprived constituencies in Northern Ireland and is the area with the highest number of peace walls, reflecting the impact The Troubles had on the area. The constituency covers many areas synonymous with the conflict, including the New Lodge, Ardoyne, Rathcoole, Ballysillan, and Woodvale.

The Belfast North constituency contains 14 wards of Belfast City Council and five wards of Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council.

Recent election results in North Belfast highlight its mixed nature. In the 2019 Westminster election, Sinn Féin's John Finucane won 47.1% of the vote and took the seat from the DUP's Nigel Dodds, who had been the MP for the area since 2001, and received a vote share of 43.1%. Alliance secured 9.9% of the vote in the area last time with their candidate Nuala McAllister, who is running again this year.

In the 2024 UK General Election, the seven candidates running in Belfast North are from Sinn Féin, DUP, TUV, People Before Profit, Alliance, Green Party, and SDLP.
