The summer is nearly here and for thousands of us that will mean heading to Spain for some summer sun. There has been some tension of late in Ibiza and the Canary Islands over overtourism, but holidays are on.

However, a new report has shed light on some environmental concerns at Spanish beaches. They have been issued with "black flags".

A total of 48 beaches in the popular tourist destination have been slapped with a 'black flag' by environmental campaigners. The damning labels were issued by Spanish activist group Ecologistas en Accion (Ecologists in Action) in a report that reveals the shocking state of some beaches, blighted by everything from litter and chemical spills to human waste.

Ibiza's Talamanca Beach is among those named and shamed, where careless anchoring by boats has inflicted 'severe damage' on marine life. The beach has also suffered from toxic chemicals being pumped into the sea by a nearby desalination plant.

El Amerador Beach near Alicante is another casualty, ruined by faecal pollution from a dilapidated and neglected pumping station. The report also points out two recent incidents in Costa Brava where human waste ended up in the sea, in March and April of this year.

Meanwhile, beaches in the Canary Islands have become so overwhelmed by litter-dropping tourists that locals have started to protest. In April, demonstrations took place in Tenerife, with banners proclaiming 'te Canaries tiene un limite' or 'the Canary Islands have a limit. '.

But it's not just tourists who are at fault, according to Ecologists in Action; they also point the finger at sewage companies for causing significant damage. The report on the Canary Islands paints a grim picture, stating: "Dreadful news for the entirety of the archipelago, as all eight Canary Islands suffer the same problem. Outlets located underwater are releasing harmful waste every single day of the year.

"Disturbingly, over 90 per cent of wastewater from urban, industrial and agricultural centres is emptied almost untreated directly into the sea."
