Full list of strikes affecting airports, border force and trains on bank holiday weekend

A series of strikes are taking place across different industries across the upcoming bank holiday weekend.

It means public travel for many will either be disrupted or outright cancelled, depending on where you're travelling to and through what mode of transportation. At the start of May, 16 train companies will go on strike while refusing to work overtimes.

Meanwhile, airports will face heavy disruptions as Border Officials and workers who refuel planes plan a walkout. We've broken down all the strikes taken place throughout bank holiday weekend to help you prepare your journeys accordingly...

Airport strikes

Border Force at Heathrow airport

Over 300 Border Force officers who help carry out immigration and passport checks at Heathrow Airport will go on strike from April 29 through to May 2 over a dispute with roster changes and working conditions. For those planning on getting on a plane on these dates from Heathrow, there will likely be extended delays.

Plane refuel workers at Heathrow airport

Meanwhile, 50 workers who refuel planes at Heathrow will also go on strike for an unbroken 72 hours from May 4. This could result in significant flight delays for those planning to travel by air over the bank holiday weekend.

Catering staff at Gatwick airport

Around 100 catering workers with Dnata plan to go on strike across April and May. This will likely result in EasyJet and Tui passengers being left with in-flight food service.

The planned strike dates are:

  • 26 April

  • 27 April

  • 28 April

  • 29 April

  • 3 May

  • 4 May

  • 5 May

  • 6 May

  • 10 May

  • 11 May

  • 12 May

  • 13 May

Rail strikes

Train workers across 16 rail companies will stage a walkout from May 7 through to May 9. The strike dates and companies affected include:

  • May 7 - Gatwick Express, Southern, Southeastern, South Western Railway, GTR Great Northern Thameslink, c2c, Greater Anglia

  • May 8 - Great Western Railway, West Midlands, East Midlands, CrossCountry, Avanti West Coast, Chiltern Railways

  • May 9 - Northern Trains, LNER, TransPennine Express

Delays may also be compounded after these dates as workers will refuse non-contracted overtime between May 6 and May 11.
