A charity event in Suffolk received a cash boost from a housebuilder.

Bellway, the developer behind the Bronze Fields estate in Bury St Edmunds, has donated £500 to aid the staging of the Relay for Life Bury St Edmunds.

The event, which raises funds for Cancer Research UK, is due to start on Saturday, July 6 at Nowton Park.

Relay for Life, an international Cancer Research UK fundraiser, last year saw more than 4 million people participate in more than 6,000 worldwide events.

The event comprises a relay race, music, games, and a Candle of Hope ceremony offering a reflective moment to remember those affected by cancer.

Co-event chairman for Relay for Life Bury St Edmunds, David Cianciola, said: “Relay For Life Bury St Edmunds is extremely grateful for the generous sponsorship donation of £500 for our 2024 event.

"We would like to say an enormous ‘thank you’ to Bellway for supporting our event – the only one of its kind throughout Suffolk.

“The event should bring together approximately 300 participants (including more than 80 cancer survivors) to celebrate the progress made in research through community fundraising.

“This donation will be an enormous boost for our volunteer committee organising the weekend to celebrate survivorship, remember loved ones and raise even more funds for this essential charity, so we can one day make cancer a thing of the past."

Bellway's Eastern Counties head of sales, Rhiannon Jones, said: “At Bellway, we are incredibly proud of our long association with Cancer Research UK and the fact that our staff have helped raise more than £3million for the charity, which is leading the way in the search for a cure for this horrible disease."

Bellway Eastern Counties is currently working on 198 new two, three and four-bedroom homes at Bronze Fields.
