Game of Thrones and Killing Eve stars to celebrate Laurie Lee at county beauty spot in special show

Game of Thrones' Anton Lesser and Killing Eve's Charlie Hamblett are to star in a special Midsummer outdoor event called Red Sky at Sunrise, situated in sight of Laurie Lee’s beloved valley, in the Rococo Garden, in Painswick. The performance will celebrate the local hero, poet, and novelist and will be told in a captivating weave of music and his own words.

Anton (Qyburn in Game of Thrones) will play the role of Laurie Lee in his older years and Charlie (Sebastian in Killing Eve) when the author was younger, along with a rich array of other characters. Together with musicians from The Orchestra of the Swan, they celebrate Lee’s humour as well as his darker side

Devised as a show by Judy Reaves, the text by Laurie Lee, famed for Cider with Rosie, has been adapted by Deirdre Shields. The Orchestra of the Swan’s Artistic Director David Le Page has devised a musical programme that weaves around Lee’s writing, from the lush Gloucestershire countryside to the dry landscapes of Spain via the music of Vaughan Williams, Walton, Holst, Elgar, Britten, Grainger, Albeniz, Turina and De Falla. Each performance will be held on the Bowling Green, in the heart of Painswick Rococo Garden. Relax and enjoy the show in a glorious valley setting, bringing you closer to the Cotswold countryside which so profoundly affected and inspired Lee. With exclusive entry to the Rococo Garden included in your ticket, the public are invited to attend the unique performance in the heart of the garden for a captivating weave of words and music.

There will be two performances on 22 June: one starting at 3.30pm and another at 7.30pm. The show runs for 1 hour 50 minutes plus a 20 minute interval. There is plenty of free parking at the Garden. You’re welcome to arrive around 45 minutes prior to the start of the performance.

This special pair of shows follows sell-out performances at the RSC in Stratford and the Oxford Playhouse. Tickets for this immersive theatrical experience are £40 per person and can be booked by clicking here. We’re expecting it to be very popular, so don’t delay.

The audience should look forward to a warm summer evening, however are advised to dress according to the weather and to bring blankets for extra warmth might be a good idea. In case of extreme weather, the performance will be moved indoors to St. Mary’s Church in Painswick. Ticket holders will be welcome to visit the garden on a separate occasion.
