Following in the footsteps of debatably the finest series of the last decade, HBO's Game of Thrones prequel now has a shooting date.

Starring Mulholland Drive actress Naomi Watts and Poldark's Josh Whitehouse, the spin-off (possibly titled The Long Night) will kick off production in "early summer", according to the network's programming president Casey Bloys, who spoke to Entertainment Weekly.

Although vague, this is in keeping with the franchise's secretive nature. After all, we're no closer to knowing ANYTHING in particular about Thrones' eighth and final season – and that's now just over two months away from premiering.

Watts recently dished a little dirt on the spin-off, describing it as "very exciting".

"I don't want to dig myself into a big hole here," she laughed, "all I want to say is it's very exciting… I'll say that again and again and again - and nothing else."

For those hoping that Thrones characters might find their way into the spin-off, however, we're sorry to say that Kit Harington certainly won't be involved.

The Jon Snow actor has categorically ruled himself out of the project.

Game of Thrones season 8 will premiere in April. The show airs on HBO in the US and Sky Atlantic and NOW TV in the UK. Season 7 is now available to buy on DVD, Blu-ray or digital download.
