Harry Potter star Gary Oldman has described his performances in the fantasy series as “mediocre.”

The veteran actor played Sirius Black in the Wizarding World, appearing in four entries across the franchise, but revealed on the Happy Sad Confused podcast that he didn’t think too much of his work on the series.

“I think my work is mediocre in it,” he said. “No, I do. Maybe if I had read the books like Alan [Rickman, who played Severus Snape], if I had gotten ahead of the curve, if I had known what’s coming, I honestly think I would have played it differently.”

“It’s like anything, if I sat and watched myself in something and said, ‘My god, I’m amazing,’ that would be a very sad day, because you want to make the next thing better,” he explained.

Whilst the actor may not be overjoyed with his work on Harry Potter, the star recently returned to the small screen for the third series of Slow Horses as the cantankerous Jackson Lamb.

The grimy nature of Oldman’s character is regularly remarked upon in the Apple TV+ series, with showrunner Will Smith recently praising the star for his unique dedication to the craft.

“He's leaning into the grunge of the character. He loves that. He loves the grime and he's got no vanity about playing him,” said Smith. “He'll be topless, washing in the sink with whatever squirt he can get from the Fairy Liquid bottle.

“That's just the joy, he just embraces the character and inhabits it and that's his genius. He's a properly transformational actor.

“I chanced upon Gary in another film – I caught a bit of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy the other night – and it's literally like a different person. He's so still as George Smiley and so composed and keeping it all in, whereas Lamb is just all out. He's remarkable.”

Slow Horses seasons 1-3 are streaming on Apple TV+.
