The newly-created seat of Gateshead and Whickham is made up mostly of the former Gateshead constituency, with the Whickham area added from the former Blaydon area.

Long-standing Gateshead MP Ian Mearns announced his retirement earlier this year, with Mark Ferguson, a former editor of the LabourList website and union activist who grew up in the town, selected as Labour candidate. Long-standing Liberal Democrat councillor Ron Beadle will contest the seat, while Martin Oliver will stand for the Conservatives.

Labour held a healthy majority in the previous Gateshead constituency but the town’s Labour-controlled council has come under fire after having to close leisure centres due to budgetary problems.
