A new Labour MP, Mark Ferguson, was elected in the Gateshead Central and Whickham constituency tonight, as the count was held at the Gateshead International Stadium. Mr Ferguson won convincingly, with 18,245 votes out of just over 40,000 that voted.

His closest challenger was Damian Heslop of Reform UK, who had 8601, followed by Ron Beadle of the Liberal Democrats and Nicholas Martin Oliver of the Conservative Party, who had totals of 4987 and 4628 respectively. The Green Party also had a strong showing, with candidate Rachel Cabral picking up 3217 votes.

The overall turnout was originally announced as 61%, but an administrative error saw this be revised to 58%, down from 59.2% in 2019. Of the 69,827 people in the constituency who are eligible to vote, 40,357 did so.

This constituency was expected to be a dominant Labour win and this adds to what is looking like a huge majority for Labour nationwide, with the exit poll suggesting that Sir Keir Starmer will be the next Prime Minister.

Voters in the Gateshead Central and Whickham constituency went to the polls in the general election 2024 after the seat was created following recent boundary changes and is made up mostly of the former Gateshead constituency, with Whickham added from the former Blaydon area.

Long-standing outgoing Gateshead MP Ian Mearns announced his retirement earlier this year.

Below are the results for each candidate in Gateshead Central and Whickham in full:
