Gateshead Leisure Centre is set to host a huge sporting name this November in one of its first events since reopening.

The popular centre in Saltwell reopened to the public on Friday, June 14, 11 months after it was closed down and boarded up due to Gateshead Council budget cuts. However, the centre is now under the control of community group Gateshead Active, who are planning to build on a successful launch with events to keep the money rolling in.

And they've managed to pull in a huge name - literally - with the former heavyweight champion of the world Lennox Lewis set to take to the stage. The November 5 date is part of the retired boxer's 2024 UK tour which also stops in Middlesbrough, Blackpool, Cardiff, and others.

Robert Waugh, a director of new leisure centre operators Gateshead Active, said: "We are delighted that we are bringing high profile events back to the Centre and back to Gateshead.

"Our centre is in talks with many event promotors to ensure a thriving events space for all in our community. Gateshead deserves more to do, to see and to take part in and our Centre with our partners seek to support that ambition."

Tickets to An Evening With Lennox Lewis range from £39 to £229 (the top end gets you a signed boxing glove and photo with Lennox Lewis) and sponsorship packages are available. At the time of writing, it is one of two events taking place at Gateshead Leisure centre - with the other An Evening With Rob Lee and John Gibson - One Night In Antwerp.
