Bensham Road in Gateshead was closed for five hours after a collision left a pedestrian hospitalised. The North East Ambulance Service were on the scene, as well as several Northumbria Police vehicles.

The collision happened between Village Heights and Cuthbert Street and among the police vehicles present at the scene was a Forensic Collision Investigation Unit.

Police investigations into the collision were carried out at the scene, while the road was closed for several hours into the evening. The pedestrian involved was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary for treatment.

A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We were called to reports of a road traffic collision at the junction of Osborne Terrace and Bensham Road in Gateshead at 3.54pm this afternoon.

"One of our patient transport crews stopped to help and we dispatched a further two ambulances and a specialist paramedic as well as requesting support from Great North Air Ambulance service.

"One patient has been taken by road to the Royal Victoria Infirmary for further treatment."
