Is there a Gavin and Stacey Christmas Special in 2021?

Gavin and Stacey's return to television for a Christmas Special in 2019 achieved two things: it broke BBC records, and it managed to stop a turkey-stuffed nation from arguing over what to watch on telly for an hour on Christmas day.

With the Shipmans hosting their loveable blended family's big Christmas bash, the show found itself moving away from Gavin (Mathew Horne) and Stacey (Joanna Page), and more onto the simmering will they/won't they of Smithy and Nessa (writers James Corden and Ruth Jones).

In fact, despite Smithy bringing his girlfriend along to the event, time stood still across the nation when Nessa got down on one knee and finally declared her love for the Essex lad.

Cut to credits before we heard the answer. Fans are now desperate to know what exactly happened and have been fighting ever since to find out.

Sadly, there was no update in 2020… But are we seeing a new episode at some point this year instead?

Unfortunately not. There is no new Gavin and Stacey Christmas Special in 2021, and there are currently no announced plans for a comeback.

However, with the cliffhanger the show was left on, it's definitely crossed Corden and Jones's mind at least once or twice – and the cast seem super keen.

Among the actors vouching for a comeback is Larry Lamb, who plays Gavin's dad Mick, and also Rob Brydon, the show's well-meaning but tightly-wound Uncle Bryn.

Brydon has since teamed up with Jones for a new sitcom, Gaynor and Ray, which was announced in August.

But despite having a year (and a couple of pandemic lockdowns) to think about it, by February 2021, Corden confirmed nothing had been written, but any future specials would 100% be the final outing for the gang.

"I don't know, is the answer," James told Metro at the time. "I honestly don't.

"I hope so much we do it. The next one will really be the last, final part. And that is a little too much pressure for my chest to take at the moment, if I'm honest, in amongst the anxiety of 2020.

"If I had any notion of trying to make another Christmas special I don't think I'd be able to breathe,” he added.

"So we'll cross that bridge when we get to it. But I promise you, we won't lead you over that bridge unless we think it will be worth the journey."

A lot of the cast have also said that they would be up for another trip to Billericay and Barry Island, although how they will get everyone back together is a different story.

Joanna Page, who plays Stacey, has largely moved away from acting, and is now a TV and radio presenter.

In August 2021, the star announced she was expecting her fourth child, which was due at Christmas time.

Even so, even she reckons that the whole cast would be up for one more round.

"It's such a joy to film," she said. "We slot into those roles when we meet up. It's really lovely and it's so rare as well.

"But then obviously I think we were all like, 'Oh my gosh, what does Smithy say? Does he say yes? Does he say no?' And you can see that they would write it brilliantly either way."

Gavin and Stacey is available on Britbox and BBC iPlayer.
