'My gender reveal was ruined by the baker's dog - but she still tried to charge me'

A mum-to-be was left furious after the cupcakes she ordered for her gender reveal party were wrecked by the baker's dog - with the brazen cakemaker still charging her for the pink and blue treats.

The expectant mother had agreed a fee of £25 with the baker, Claire, ahead of a small family bash last Easter. The 23-year-old had recently discovered she was having a baby girl and was excited to share the news with her nearest and dearest, The Mirror reports.

The day before the party, she went to Claire's home, as agreed, to pick up the 12 cupcakes, which had "pink and blue icing on top, and pink icing in the middle". But rather than it being a simple transaction of cash for cakes, disaster struck when the food expert's pet dog got involved.

Taking to Reddit, the frustrated woman said: "I drove to her apartment and knocked on the door. She greeted me there with the box of cupcakes and they looked amazing.

"They were exactly how I imagined them and I thanked her for them. She gave me the box, but just as she did, her large pet dog came running up to me, barking, and jumped at me, knocking the box of cupcakes all over the floor."

The baker apologised profusely and shut her dog back in the flat, apologetically explaining that the pooch gets excited by visitors and insisting that he didn't mean any harm.

The mum-to-be brushed it off and went to check the cupcakes. As the box had landed upside down, neither she nor Claire realised the extent of the damage.

Upon closer inspection, both realised that the mini-cakes were unsalvageable because "the icing had smashed all over the box" and some of them had spilled out onto the ground.

She added: "Claire looked horrified as I understand she spent a few hours making them for me. She apologised and said she could remake them for free, but they wouldn't be ready until Sunday."

"I told her that unfortunately, my guests are coming tomorrow and Sunday won't work for me as I have other plans. I made it clear I wouldn't pay for these cupcakes as they were inedible and ruined by her dog. We had agreed on payment upon receipt of the goods, and since I hadn't received them in an acceptable condition, I wouldn't be paying."

But the shocked baker insisted that the woman should still pay for the cupcakes, as she had bought ingredients and spent time making them. But the expectant mother refused and left without paying.

Following the incident, however, she is unsure whether she did the right thing and asked Reddit users if she should have paid for the cupcakes.

One person replied: "Why on earth would you need to pay for something you didn't receive? I know it would be nice to help out Claire a little bit if you guys were friends but if this is just some lady then no."

Another Redditor commented: "She is a business owner. She needs to act like a professional. Having a wild, uncontrollable dog jumping all over your customers and knocking your product out of their hands as they're trying to pick it up is not acting like a professional.

"This has nothing to do with the cost of eggs. She knows her dog doesn't behave and therefore should crate it or lock it in another room when she is meeting customers."
