Bishop Auckland was one of the seats that caught the headlines in 2019 when the area elected a Conservative MP for the first time. Dehenna Davidson was tipped as a rising star of the Tory party after being elected at the age of 26. She became a Levelling Up Minister but has opted to leave frontline politics after just a single term.

Labour are looking to win back the seat with union activist Sam Rushworth while the Conservatives have selected small business owner Jane MacBean, who was previously a councillor in Buckinghamshire. Bishop Auckland is a mostly rural seat that includes the market towns of Bishop Auckland and Barnard Castle, boundary changes have seen it gain Tow Law and Crook.
