General election 2024: The candidates standing in Ynys Mon

Ynys Mon is the only Welsh seat not impacted by a boundary review. As an island, it received protected status.

The boundaries of all but one Welsh seat have changed ahead of the 2024 election, only Ynys Mon (the island of Anglesey) remains untouched, all others have seen changes which could impact the results on election night. You can read the background to the changes here.

Instead of 40 constituencies, there are now 32 in Wales and the idea behind it is to make all Westminster constituencies the same size.

Ieuan Môn Williams - Labour

Ieuan Môn Williams, Labour candidate for Ynys Mon
Ieuan Môn Williams, Labour candidate for Ynys Mon

I'm Ieuan, and my whole family is from Ynys Môn. My dad served in the Royal Air Force for 36 years while my mam served her community with the Girl Guides. I'm 32, married to Geraldine, and we have a 7 month old son, Osian.

I trained as a musician at university but then went into politics, where I was lucky enough to work for Albert Owen, Ynys Môn's last MP. After that I went to work in the nuclear industry, and have more recently worked across the clean energy sector. I still play in a band, and when I had more time on my hands, I loved watching F1 at the weekends!

Name a policy you want to see become law if elected as an MP

Given my background in energy it might not come as a surprise to say that a policy I would like to see become law is Labour’s commitment to setting up Great British energy – a publicly owned, clean power company to cut bills and boost energy security. So many families I speak to on the doorsteps are suffering because of sky-rocketing energy bills. Labour would fund this by introducing a windfall tax on big gas and oil companies and only then can we start the transition to cleaner power and lower bills.

What's the biggest issue facing Wales and what will you do to fix it?

Tackling the cost-of-living crisis has to be the number one priority for me as it cuts across every aspect of our lives. The Conservatives have left families struggling after fourteen years of chaos. Labour will take action to support families by tackling the underlying causes of the crisis. From bringing down the cost of energy, making housing more affordable, creating secure jobs and making work pay. Labour has committed to continue exploring opportunities for new nuclear at Wylfa which would create jobs and boost the local economy.

Who has been the best British Prime Minister and why?

Clement Attlee’s leadership was transformative – from our NHS, council housing to rebuilding our economy. If we are lucky enough to form a government on 4th July, we too will have to deliver lasting change in hugely challenging times.
