Summary:

Labour has held this constituency since its creation in 1945.

Since 1994, Dame Margaret Hodge has been the MP and she has fought against the Far Right which has sought to gain ground in this area of east London where there are communities with many households on low incomes and in social housing.

Dame Margaret, who is not seeking re-election, was leader of Islington council for a decade from 1982 when it was often portrayed as a “Loony Left” town hall.

As an MP, she was a forceful chair of the Commons public accounts committee, and more recently has campaigned for more action to stop economic crime.

She was very critical of Jeremy Corbyn during the anti-Semitism storm which engulfed Labour.

She also served as a minister in the Brown and Blair governments.
