Charlotte Crosby condemns ‘unbelievable’ Channel 5 documentary that ‘dissected’ her appearance

Charlotte Crosby has criticised Channel 5 for airing a documentary about her plastic surgery.

The TV personality – who rose to fame on MTV’s reality series Geordie Shore in 2011 – was the subject of the second episode of the two-part documentary titled Celebrities: What’s Happened to Your Face?

Following the episode’s broadcast on Thursday (22 April), Crosby tweeted her criticism of the show, Channel 5 and Crackit Productions – the producers behind the series.

In a lengthy post, she wrote: “In 2021, a main UK channel & production company believed it would be a good use of airtime, to dissect my physical appearance.”

Crosby, who has been candid about undergoing cosmetic procedures, opened up about her “public battle with my appearance”, adding that she has gone through “personal trauma & issues of self-confidence in the spot-light”.

The I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! star continued: “One quick google or look at my Instagram page, you’ll see how intensely I’ve been targeted by trolls, and how I’ve learnt to ignore the hate, focus on the positive and work on loving myself again.”

She explained that she had found out that the series had been commissioned in March 2020, stating that her agent was “appalled” and made it clear to Crackit Productions at the time that they found it “immoral and insensitive”.

Crosby added that her agent also highlighted “how detrimental this would be to my mental health”, but claimed that her agent was “ignored”.

The 31-year-old went on to condemn Channel 5 and other “mainstream TV channels” as “trolls”.

“That hour could have been used to host a mental health documentary. That hour could have educated the public in the many issues & good causes which need publicity,” she wrote.

“That hour didn’t need to go after a 31-year-old woman for her appearance, choices, and ‘rubber lips.’”

Crosby – who recently appeared on Channel 4’s reality series The Celebrity Circle – concluded the post: “When is enough enough? Just because we’re in the public eye, doesn’t mean we aren’t human. Fortunately I’m strong enough to deal with it but many aren’t.”

The post has since received nearly 22,000 likes with many fans commenting their support and praise of Crosby for speaking out.

In a statement issued to The Independent, a representative for Channel 5 revealed that the episode has since been removed from the broadcaster’s streaming platform, My5.

“While we acknowledge that the programme was OFCOM compliant, we have taken on board Charlotte’s feedback and removed the episode from our streaming platform My5,” the statement reads.

The first episode of the controversial series looked at Madonna and Simon Cowell as its subjects.
