George Michael fans 'sobbing' as his posthumous single 'Fantasy' gets first radio play
Earlier this morning BBC Radio 2 premiered George Michael’s first posthumous single, ‘Fantasy’ – a remix of a former B-side from the early 90s.
Chris Evans introduced the track on his breakfast radio show, with thousands of George’s fans flocking to social media after it played to reveal that they were “sobbing” and “in tears” as they mourned the icon for a second time.
The reworked single was produced with the help of Nile Rodgers, who admitted that he hoped to make the star’s fans “proud”, with ‘Fantasy’ being the first new music from George since his death on Christmas day 2016.
Introducing the song, George’s manager David Austin explained the song’s history to host Chris, sharing: “Fantasy was originally meant to be on Listen Without Prejudice and was intended to be one of the singles from the album, but somehow it got lost in the ether.
“But George did then release it later as a B-side in 1990.
“Last year they were looking for a lead single for the reissue of George’s Listen Without Prejudice and to accompany the new film Freedom.
“Fantasy was George’s first and obvious choice so in early 2016 Nile reworked the record.”
Wrapping up the song, Chris told listeners: “The more you read now about what he was up to around Christmas the more you realise leaving this mortal coil was not what he intended because he had so much going on.
“It’s such a shame, but his music lives on.”
A sentiment that George’s fans couldn’t agree more with, tweeting:
