George RR Martin is teasing fans by admitting that possibly two Game of Thrones books will drop in 2018.

In a LiveJournal post, the author revealed a true progress report on The Winds of Winter, his sixth novel in the Song of Ice and Fire series. He also revealed plans for two volumes of his "fake histories" of the Targaryen kings called Fire and Blood, which sound rather intriguing indeed.

Just us, or does a story about the Targaryen civil war sound awesome?

"We have so much material that it's been decided to publish the book in two volumes," Martin said.

"The first of those will cover the history of Westeros from Aegon's Conquest up to and through the regency of the boy king Aegon III (the Dragonbane).

"That one is largely written, and will include (for the first time) a complete detailed history of the Targaryen civil war, the Dance of the Dragons."

"The second volume, which will carry the history from Aegon III up to Robert's Rebellion, is largely unwritten, so that one will be a few more years in coming."

And the good news doesn't stop there because Martin also revealed that, after a rather long wait for The Winds of Winter, the novel and the first Fire and Blood book could be making their way onto shelves next year.

Hmm. We'll believe that when we see it...

"I don't know which story is more absurd – the one that says [Winds of Winter] is finished and I've been sitting on it for some nefarious reason, or the one that says I have no pages," he added.

"Both 'reports' are equally false and equally moronic. I am still working on it, I am still months away. I still have good days and bad days, and that's all I care to say.

"Whether Winds of Winter or the first volume of Fire and Blood will be the first to hit the bookstores is hard to say at this juncture, but I do think you will have a Westeros book from me in 2018... and who knows, maybe two.

"A boy can dream..."

Here's hoping a boy can write fast also.

Game of Thrones continues next Sunday (July 30) on HBO in the US and airs on Sky Atlantic and NOW TV in the UK. Watch a clip for season 7 episode 3, 'The Queen's Justice', right here:
