Metrocentre's food offering is about to expand with the opening of a kebab shop.

The Gateshead shopping centre is about to welcome one of the fastest-growing restaurant groups in the UK, German Doner Kebab (GDK). The restaurant chain opened its first North East site in Newcastle city centre in 2021.

And now it is preparing to open a new North East restaurant in the Yellow Mall opposite the recently expanded Primark store which opened this spring.

The Metrocentre branch will be GDK's 143rd UK site and will join fast-food restaurants Five Guys, Slim Chickens, and Wingstop already located in the mall. It will have a capacity for 42 people at the 2823 sq ft site.

GDK serves Halal-friendly kebabs at each of its restaurants and prides itself on using premium cuts of meat, fresh locally sourced salad, signature handmade sauces and toasted waffle bread. It has also recently launched a plant-based doner, offering vegetarian alternatives to the mains, the Boss Box, and the Doner Box.

Simon Wallis, CEO of German Doner Kebab, said: "I am thrilled to officially announce plans to bring the unique GDK taste sensation to the Metrocentre Shopping Centre. GDK is revolutionising kebabs across the UK and I am confident we will continue this trend in Gateshead. GDK offers a premium dining experience with game-changing kebabs that are made fresh daily by our hard-working team powered by our fantastic franchise partners. We pride ourselves in ensuring that kebabs are done right and served in a modern and relaxed environment, making it a unique restaurant experience for all new members of the ever-growing GDK community."

Noah Knapton, Asset Manager at Sovereign Centros from CBRE, Asset and Development Managers of Metrocentre, said: "GDK's new site at Metrocentre continues to demonstrate the pull we have to international operators, delivering choice across a critical mass of global and independent restaurants. Sitting alongside the likes of Five Guys, Slim Chickens, and Wingstop, GDK will provide a tried and tested grab-and-go offer, and one that will no doubt hit the right notes for our visitors as we continue to build a solid F&B line-up in Yellow Mall."

The restaurant will be located on the ground floor of Yellow Mall, opposite the recently upsized Primark, with a takeaway and delivery service for those on the go from the GDK app, Deliveroo, UberEats and Just Eat.
