Giancarlo Esposito talks "very different" experience on Netflix's The Gentlemen

The Gentlemen star Giancarlo Esposito has opened up about his "very different" experience on the show.

The actor plays wealthy drug baron Uncle Stan in Guy Ritchie's new Netflix series, which is a spin-off of his own 2019 movie starring Matthew McConaughey.

Speaking exclusively to Digital Spy, Esposito explained how the director rewrote parts of the script on the same day as filming.

"It's a very different way of working that I'm used to. On my very first day I called into the trailer, we had a 45-minute conversation about life and culture and aristocracy and money and privilege," he said.

"And little did I know that during that conversation in his brain, he was rewriting the day's work. So it was really interesting for me to realise that Matt [Read], the co-writer, was sitting there typing all these ideas up and then he brought it all the way back to the scene in our conversation.

"And then we went over some things that we had just talked about for momentarily. And all that went into a completely new scene. And then I got new pages right there and in 15 minutes we were shooting it. So it allowed me to be in a kind of very free space."

The Better Call Saul star went on to explain how Ritchie's unusual script writing method helped him adapt to a new way of working.

"I found it a very different way of working and I found it to be very specific in the moment on the day, as opposed to talking about a scene we're gonna do tomorrow or the next day," he explained.

"You're talking about what's going to happen today, and how we're going to make it better because that's really present. And so I like that way of working. I like that presence. It wasn't something I was used to. But it was something that allowed me to feel more present."

The eight-part crime drama centres around Theo James' character Eddie Horniman, who unknowingly inherits his father's successful cannabis empire. The series also stars Kaya Scodelario, Joely Richardson, Vinnie Jones and Ray Winstone.

The Gentlemen is available to stream on Netflix.
