Girl 'dragged under front wheel' of school bus after bag gets stuck in door

A schoolgirl has suffered serious injuries after 'dragged under the front wheel' of a bus.

Police said the 14-year-old's bag reportedly 'got stuck' in the white coach while she was exiting it. The vehicle then set off and dragged her under the front wheel.

The incident happened on London Road in Carlisle, at the junction of Chertsey Mount. Emergency services rushed to the scene at around 4.15pm on Thursday (May 2).

Officers said the teenager suffered 'serious leg injuries'. They are now appealing for witness and dashcam footage.

In a statement issued this morning (May 4), a force spokesperson said: "We are appealing for witnesses as part of an investigation into a collision which resulted in a teenager suffering serious injuries in Carlisle. At some point between 4:10pm and 4:15pm on Thursday 2nd May there was an incident on London Road, at the junction of Chertsey Mount.

"It was reported to police yesterday (3 May) that a 14-year-old girl’s bag got trapped in a school bus door whilst she was exiting it. The bus, a white coach, had then set off dragging the girl under the front wheel.

"The girl suffered serious leg injuries. Officers are appealing for witnesses to come forward to help establish the full circumstances of the incident.

"They are also seeking to hear from motorists who may have dashcam footage which may have captured the incident. Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101 and ask to speak to PC 2746 Barr.
