Those tuning in to watch Coldplay's epic headline set at Glastonbury Festival 2024 were left slightly baffled by Chris Martin. The group threw it back to the year 2000 as they opened their record-breaking fifth headline slot at the massive music event with their hit song Yellow.

Coldplay first headlined on the Pyramid Stage in 2002, and their Saturday night performance sees them overtake The Cure, who have headlined the slot four times.

Frontman Chris Martin, guitarist Jonny Buckland, drummer Will Champion and bassist Guy Berryman started their history-making set after a clock counted down on screens, which was followed by a BBC logo on the screen before the music started.

Their second song of the night was Higher Power, from their ninth album Music Of The Spheres, with Martin going on to sit down on the stage as he started the song Paradise, from their 2011 album Mylo Xyloto, where singer-songwriter Victoria Canal joined them on the piano.

But as Chris, who hails from Whitestone, Devon, interacted with the packed-out crowd at Worthy Farm in Somerset between tracks, fans were left confused by his apparent American accent.

@DC_THFC asked: "What’s wrong with Chris Martin’s accent?" @Kevsafc22 questioned: "Is it me, or is Chris Martin trying to speak with an American accent when he's talking to the crowd? #Glastonbury." @XisNo1Concubine wrote: "Why is Chris Martin speaking in an American accent?"

@magdalencja commented: "Is it me or Chris Martin's accent is very American. Still love his voice though." @JamesKinsey added: "Chris Martin’s accent is strange now when he talks. He does live in Malibu, California though which is probably the reason. #glastonbury."

Others, however, were distracted by his blunder. @REWearmouth noted: "Chris Martin just called Glastonbury “the greatest city on earth”. I know he probably wasn’t being literal but it is a town. And has he developed a bit of an American accent? Anyway: down with this sort of thing."

@HannahAMont joked: "Chris Martin just gave Glastonbury city status. I didn’t know he had that power.@Ger_Leggett added: "'Glastonbury is the greatest city on earth' Chris Martin tells a crowd thousands strong, none of whom live in Glastonbury. #Glastonbury."
