Based on the 2001 Texas Monthly magazine article of the same name by Skip Hollandsworth, “Hit Man” follows a Houston police associate (Powell) who disguises himself as an assassin in order to catch willing clients. After getting invested in saving one particular woman (Adria Arjona) in an abusive relationship, hijinks ensue. The film also stars Austin Amelio, Retta and Molly Bernard.

Coming off the success of “Top Gun: Maverick” and “Anyone but You,” Powell writes himself the role of a lifetime with “Hit Man,” collaborating with Linklater on the script. The comedy was one of the biggest hits at the Venice Film Festival, where it played in competition, with successful runs at Toronto and New York after that. In his review, Variety chief film critic Owen Gleiberman praised “Hit Man” as “studded with delicious moments.”

Linklater is known for his work on films including the “Before” romance trilogy, the cult favorite “Dazed and Confused” and the drama “Boyhood,” in which he explored themes relating to adolescence and aging. Linklater and Powell previously collaborated on the college baseball ensemble comedy “Everybody Wants Some!!” and the trippy, animated fable “Apollo 10 1/2: A Space Childhood,” also released on Netflix.

“Hit Man” is produced by Linklater, Michael Blizzard for Detour Pictures, Michael Costigan and Jason Bateman for Aggregate Films, and Powell with his production company BarnStorm Productions.
