A 'throwback photo' of Gogglebox's Mary Killen has gone viral, leaving many viewers convinced that the star used to be a model.

The picture was quickly circulated on Twitter and gained momentum after it was also shared by Zoe Ball, prompting fans of the Channel 4 show to look into the idea that Mary has done some modelling back in the day.

In the black and white photo, the young woman many believe to be Mary can be seen posing on the street, while a passer-by looks back over his shoulder.

"Mary from Gogglebox is a national treasure," wrote one viewer, in response to the picture.

"Mary from Gogglebox really snapped back in the day!" someone else tweeted.

But as much as the model does look like it could be Mary, other keen-eyed viewers were able to point out that the model in the throwback picture is actually model Susan Shaw. Sorry guys.

One wrote: "Everyone is RTing this. It could be Nutty Mary from Gogglebox, but it's in fact a model called Susan Shaw."

"I've been trying to convince people for the past two days that it's not Mary from Gogglebox," another one added, while someone else was left disappointed that this wasn't Mary: "Quite upset that that photo going about of Mary from isn't actually her."

And just to nip the comparisons in the bud, a spokesperson from the show has also released a statement, telling Metro.co.uk: "We have checked with Mary and although hugely flattered, it is not her. It is a model called Susan Shaw."

Well, there you have it.

Gogglebox airs Friday nights on Channel 4.
