“Golden Bachelor”'s Kathy Swarts Says Gerry and Theresa Are 'Doing What They Have to Do' By Getting Divorced (Exclusive)

"Everyone's doing the best they can," the 'Golden Hour' podcast co-host tells PEOPLE of the now-exes

The Golden Bachelor’s Kathy Swarts wants the best for Gerry Turner and Theresa Nist as they navigate their divorce after three months of marriage.

“We all wish them a lifetime of love,” Swarts, 70, tells PEOPLE in a joint interview with her Bachelor Happy Hour: Golden Hour podcast co-host Susan Noles. “But they're doing what they have to do in their life. And I think that's the message here is everyone's doing the best they can.”

Swarts served as a Gold Carpet correspondent with former Bachelorette Charity Lawson at Turner and Nist’s live, televised wedding in January and remains friends with both the retired restaurateur, 72, and the financial services professional, 70, in the wake of their April 12 divorce announcement. The pair credited the split with disagreeing over where to live, as Nist hails from New Jersey and Turner resides in Indiana.

Swarts thinks “life goes on” for both Turner and Nist and urges Bachelor Nation to “focus on the positive parts of life.”

The retired educational consultant believes that age has given her and Noles, 67, perspective. “We've lived a lot of life and we can see things that may be something when you're 27 or 28,” Swarts says.

Swarts and Noles offer their input multiple times a week to listeners who submit questions to their Golden Hour podcast. Since the podcast launched in late March, Noles and Swarts have weighed in on infidelity, dating after the death of a spouse, polyamory, talking to your kids about their sexuality and more.

“We'll answer anything,” Noles says.

Swarts adds, “We may not have the right answer, but we have our opinion and take it for what it's worth.”

Despite being close friends, Noles and Swarts often disagree on how to tackle listeners’ issues.

“Susan and I are either exactly on the same page or we are so far apart that the Atlantic Ocean's between us,” Swarts says. “Sometimes Susan has to just understand that she's wrong and it sometimes takes a while, but she gets there.”

But “it is what it is,” Noles says. “We don't make s--- up. That's our true, honest, from-the-gut thought.”

Swarts credits that authenticity with why listeners connect with their podcast. “We don't say things that we don't mean, and I think people value that,” she says.

The early response to Golden Hour has proven that to be true. “We have so many people write us and tell us how much better they feel after hearing us,” says Noles, who officiated Turner and Nist’s wedding.

Noles calls “sharing myself with so many people” the greatest gift of her Golden Bachelor experience.

“Kathy and I on our way to St. Martin and people knew exactly who we were, and it's always people sharing what we did for them and how much they appreciate it,” Noles says. “That is so heartfelt.”

Swarts feels similarly about her catapult into the spotlight. “The most amazing change has been someone coming up to me and saying, ‘You inspire me to live a better life,’” she says. “It makes me feel great to know that I'm having a positive influence on some people and that people don't feel their life is over. That really does warm my heart.”
