Golden Globes 2024: Did Jo Koy Kill — or Die — as First-Time Host? Grade His Opening Monologue

Golden Globes 2024: Did Jo Koy Kill — or Die — as First-Time Host? Grade His Opening Monologue

Comedian Jo Koy kicked off Sunday’s Golden Globes ceremony with a monologue that made fun of Ozempic use, railed about Oppenheimer‘s length and featured Meryl Streep performing the Wakanda salute.

Sound uneven? That’s how it came across to viewers watching the CBS/Paramount+ simulcast at home, and perhaps also in the room. “Yo, I got the gig 10 days ago,” Koy told the crowd when one joke didn’t get a huge laugh. “You want a perfect monologue? Shut up.”

The telecast marked Koy’s first time emceeing the annual awards gala. Some notable moments from his intro:

* “Kevin Costner’s here! Kevin Costner’s never here!”

* “I loved Oppenheimer. I just got one complaint: It needed another hour. I feel like it needed some more backstory… I love Oppenheimer, especially the first season.”

* “I don’t want you guys to think that I’m a creep,” Koy said of his being attracted to a character in Barbie. “There’s just something about your eyes, Ryan.” (He referred, of course, to Ken himself, Ryan Gosling.)

* “Where’s Barry Keoghan seated?” Koy asked, searching for the star of Saltburn and its wild sex scenes. Then: “Where’s your penis seated, down front? That’s the real star of the show.”

* “The Color Purple is also what happens to our butts when you take Ozempic.”

* On HBO’s Succession: “The one thing that this show taught me was if you’re a billionaire, pull out.”

* On Imelda Staunton’s role in The Crown‘s final season: “Her portrayal of the queen was so good, Prince Harry called her and asked her for money.”

Koy is known for his stand-up specials on Comedy Central and Netflix — 2022’s Live from the Los Angeles Forum is his most recent, and he has two more on the way — as well as for being a recurring panelist on Chelsea Handler’s now-defunct late-night series Chelsea Lately. He also has appeared in episodes of Awkwafina Is Nora From Queens and Mr. Iglesias. (Learn a lot more about Koy here.)

Koy’s intro to the 81st Golden Globe Awards was markedly different from that of prior host Jerrod Carmichael, who used the 2023 ceremony’s opening minutes to address NBC’s cancellation of the 2022 broadcast. The cancellation stemmed from criticism of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, previous owners of the Globes, which was called out for its lack of racial diversity behind the scenes. Carmichael’s subdued monologue started with his announcing “I’m here because I’m Black” and reminded the audience that the HFPA “but they “didn’t have a single Black member until George Floyd died. So do with that information what you will.”
