The Golden Globes are making room for more nominees.

On Tuesday, the awards show announced the addition of two new categories: cinematic and box office achievement in motion pictures, and best stand-up comedian on television.

The box office category will have eight nominees and the films are also eligible to compete in other categories. To fit in this new section, the movie needs to have made over $150 million at the box office, and data from "recognized industry sources" will be consulted for streaming films.

The 81st Golden Globe Awards will air live on Sunday, Jan. 7. Nominations will be announced Monday, Dec. 11.

Helen Hoehne, Golden Globes president, said in a statement, "The Golden Globes has a rich history of supporting and celebrating the work of comedians, and we’re thrilled to honor their brilliance alongside outstanding motion picture and television performances of the year."

"Additionally," said Hoehne, "we are proud to recognize the hard work and innovation that goes into making a film that is both a blockbuster and artistically exceptional."

Tim Gray, Golden Globes executive vice president, added, "The new cinematic and box office achievement award is more than just rewarding the year’s top-earning and most-viewed motion pictures. These films have typically not been recognized among industry awards, but they should be."

So far, the highest-grossing film at the domestic box office this year is Barbie, followed by The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Oppenheimer and The Little Mermaid.

Back in 2018, the Academy Awards introduced a Best Popular Film category, though the Academy quickly walked it back and canceled the initiative. In 2022, the Oscars had two fan-voted categories: Fan Favorite and Oscars Cheer Moment.

In June, the Golden Globes, which the Hollywood Foreign Press Association founded in 1943, announced that Dick Clark Productions and holding company Eldridge "acquired all the Golden Globes’ assets, rights, and properties" from the HFPA, resulting in "the wind-down of the HFPA and its membership."

The awards show's change of ownership came months after the show returned to NBC in January after facing controversies about the HFPA in recent years. NBC did not televise the 2022 Golden Globes.
