The Good Wife spin-off The Good Fight has proven so successful that a third season was commissioned before the second season finished.

Kicking off a year after the finale of The Good Wife, the spin-off follows Christine Baranski's Diane Lockhart after an enormous financial scam forces her out of Lockhart, Deckler, Gussman, Lee, Lyman, Gilbert-Lurie, Kagan, Tannebaum, & Associates.

Across its two seasons to date, The Good Fight has tackled timely issues like fake news, online harassment and the #MeToo movement. "[It] is a perfect example of what we strive for a CBS All Access original series to be: thought-provoking, boundary-pushing and, most of all, incredibly entertaining," enthused CBS All Access vice president Julie McNamara.

So what can we expect from season three? Let's sort out the evidence.

The Good Fight season 3 release date: When can we expect it?

Season one premiered on February 19, 2017 on CBS All Access in the US, followed by season two on March 4, 2018, so we reckon we can expect season three around the same time of early March in 2019.

More4 airs the spin-off in the UK and started season two on March 30, so UK fans will probably have to wait until late March or early April next year.

The Good Fight season 3 cast: Who's coming back?

Aside from Carl Reddick's (Louis Gossett Jr) death before season two, the rest of the main cast survived the season.

So that means returns for Christine Baranski as Diane Lockhart (obviously), Rose Leslie as Diane's goddaughter Maia Rindell, Erica Tazel as Barbara Kolstad, Delroy Lindo as Adrian Boseman, Cush Jumbo as Lucca Quinn and Audra McDonald as Carl's ex-wife Liz Lawrence, among others.

Could season three also feature a cameo from Julianna Margulies to reprise her Good Wife role as Alicia Florrick? Executive producer Michelle King has hinted at a potential comeback for Alicia, but Margulies revealed last year that she actually turned down a cameo in the show.

"The reason I declined was because I thought it would be a disservice to those women and they will carry that torch," she explained, so we wouldn't hold our breath for an appearance.

The Good Fight season 3 episodes: How many will there be?

Unlike The Good Wife which had seasons of 22 or 23 episodes, The Good Fight's first season was only 10 episodes and the second extended slightly to 13.

There's a chance that the third season could be extended again (CBS All Access gave Star Trek: Discovery a 15-episode first season), but we have a feeling it'll stick to a contained 13-episode run, although nothing has yet been confirmed.

The Good Fight season 3 plot: What will it be about?

Late in season two, Diane was approached by Tara Strokes (Taylor Louderman), a porn star who had slept with the president, and told to "follow the women" if she wants to take down the Donald Trump administration, so there's a chance that will form part of season three.

However, Diane is also in danger of being indicted as the season-two finale saw her in danger of being named as a co-conspirator in a plot to assassinate the president. She seemed to avoid the danger as she got Adrian to leak false information to a Fox News journalist that the federal prosecutor was having an affair with Tara, leading to the president (likely) firing him.

Baranski doesn't think that Diane is in the clear just yet heading into season three. "I think from what we've seen of Diane at the end of season two, she's in deep trouble. She's possibly going to be indicted for being a co-conspirator to assassinate the president. That's big stuff," she told Deadline.

The episode titles of the second season referred to the number of days of Trump's presidency and creators Robert and Michelle King expect season three to be just as timely.

"In a post-factual world, narrative seems to have the honesty that people find they're not getting from facts, and that is bullshit. That's a lie. So next year will be very meta," Robert explained. "I think Trump and others in the administration use that sense of the shock and the turn that you want to distract. So I think that's what we want to do next season."

Writing on the third season will start before the 2018 elections though, so the creators added that they don't yet know how the real-world politics will affect their show.

The Good Fight airs on CBS All Access in the US and More4 in the UK.
