Mae Whitman's latest series Up Here has been given the axe after just one season.

The musical romantic comedy stars the Good Girls protagonist and The Flash's Carlos Valdes as a couple navigating life and their budding relationship in 1999 New York, all whilst dealing with the ever-present voices in their heads.

Variety reports that following the show's initial run of eight episodes, it will not return.

With Broadway director Thomas Kail (Hamilton, In the Heights) behind the camera, Up Here was developed by New Girl and My Name is Earl writer Danielle Sanchez-Witzel and Steven Levenson, who penned the book for the musical Dear Evan Hansen.

The series also boasted original musical numbers from Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, the songwriters of Frozen and Frozen 2.

Whitman recently took to her Instagram page to share a picture from the picket lines amidst the current SAG-AFTRA strike.

"Just your friendly neighbourhood actors showing support for our union and of course the writers out on the picket line," she wrote.

"No-one wants to be on strike but we are at an historical turning point where we HAVE to stand up for what is fair and to keep all of the members of our industry protected."

It was announced earlier this month that SAG-AFTRA members would take strike action for the first time since 1980 after talks with major studios broke down.

The actors' guild, representing around 160,000 performers, has been calling for better pay and increased safeguarding around the use of AI.

With actors and writers on strike simultaneously for the first time since 1960, numerous film and TV productions have been affected.

Season 1 of Up Here is available to stream on Hulu for viewers based in the US. Those in the UK can watch it on Disney+.
