Good Morning Britian’s Susanna Reid has issued an emotional statement live on air following the death of Dr Michael Mosley.

The much-loved TV doctor regularly appeared on ITV hit daytime show This Morning and was popular among viewers.

Last week it was reported that Michael went missing while on holiday in Greece with wife Clare. The 67-year-old vanished after setting off on a walk to the centre of the island on Wednesday. Eleftherios Papakaloudoukas, the mayor of Symi, vowed to continue the extensive search operation, which has involved police, firefighters with drones, and divers.

It has now been revealed that the star sadly died on the Greek island of Symi. His body was found behind a wall and fence near a resort. It is believed he either passed out due to the heat or fell on the rocky terrain. During Monday’s episode of Good Morning Britain Susanna started the show with an emotional tribute to Dr Mosley.

Speaking to viewers at home, she said: "There is a huge outpouring of love and sadness over the death of Michael Mosley... People are absolutely gobsmacked on what on earth could possibly have happened. He was on this gorgeous Greek island, he'd been there before with his wife. He just leaves the beach to make his way to the accommodation - it just seems - everyone scratches their head. Had he taken a wrong turn? Perhaps he got hydrated - his wife said he did have a bottle of water; he had his umbrella. There's that sense of why did it happen? Could it have been avoided? Why on earth it's taken so long to find him?"

She later added: "It just seems so senseless really. Of course, this is our top news this morning because his body has been transferred to the Greek island of Rhodes. There there will be a post-mortem. A preliminary examination has ruled out any foul play."

Clare issued a heartbreaking statement following the confirmation that Michael had passed away. She said: "I don’t know quite where to begin with this. It’s devastating to have lost Michael, my wonderful, funny, kind and brilliant husband. We had an incredibly lucky life together. We loved each other very much and were so happy together. I am incredibly proud of our children, their resilience and support over the past days.

"My family and I have been hugely comforted by the outpouring of love from people from around the world. It’s clear that Michael meant a huge amount to so many of you. We’re taking comfort in the fact that he so very nearly made it. He did an incredible climb, took the wrong route and collapsed where he couldn’t be easily seen by the extensive search team."

She added: "Michael was an adventurous man, it’s part of what made him so special. We are so grateful to the extraordinary people on Symi who have worked tirelessly to help find him. Some of these people on the island, who hadn’t even heard of Michael, worked from dawn till dusk unasked. We’re also very grateful to The Press who have dealt with us with great respect. I feel so lucky to have our children and my amazing friends. Most of all, I feel so lucky to have had this life with Michael. Thank you all."
