GOP Congressman Evacuates US Citizens From Haiti by Helicopter

Florida congressman and military veteran Cory Mills said he coordinated a helicopter evacuation of 13 American citizens from Haiti’s capital city of Port-au-Prince on Monday, March 18, as gang warfare continued to cause chaos across the country.

Mills, a Republican, said it was “with great pride” that he could announce the evacuation. “Our team has now successfully rescued and evacuated more Americans than Biden and his entire administration,” he wrote.

Video posted by Mills shows people boarding a helicopter, and photos show the congressman and some of the evacuees mid-flight.

Six days earlier, on March 12, Mills and fellow Republican Rep Lisa McClain evacuated a group of 10 US citizens who were trapped at the Have Faith Haiti orphanage in Port-au-Prince. The group included the owner of the orphanage, famed American author Mitch Albom, Albom’s wife, and eight volunteers, according to a post on Albom’s Facebook account. Both Mills and McClain criticized the Biden administration for what they said was a pattern of “abandoning” Americans in times of crisis.

On Saturday, March 16, the US State Department announced a charter flight from Cap-Haitien to Miami would be available to Americans on Sunday, but warned that traveling to the airport could be dangerous. “We recommend you consider the Cap-Haitien flight only if you believe you can reach Cap-Haitien airport safely,” they wrote. More than 30 Americans boarded the flight on Sunday, reports said. Credit: Rep Cory Mills via Storyful
