Gordon Cormier Prepares to Battle Daniel Dae Kim in Fiery First Trailer for “Avatar: The Last Airbender”

The Netflix series' first trailer offers a peek at the dangerous journey ahead for its trio of young heroes

Can one reluctant, pint-sized hero take on the world’s most fearsome ruler?

That’s the challenge at the center of Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender. Based on the beloved comic books of the same name, the new fantasy series follows the adventures of Aang (Gordon Cormier) and his two friends Katara (Kiawentiio) and Sokka (Ian Ousley) as they learn more about their elemental powers during their adventures and prepare to take on Fire Lord Ozai (Daniel Dae Kim), the ruthless leader of the Fire Nation.

The show’s first trailer opens with a fleet of ships from the Fire Nation speeding through choppy waters before cutting to a distant shot of Aang’s six-legged flying bison Appa soaring above the trees.

“The Fire Nation has embarked on a dark path, and the world might never recover,” a narrator says. “The world needs the avatar. It needs you, Aang.”

In the next scene, Aang frozen in an iceberg, finally emerges from his 100-year slumber, with Katara and Sokka looking on.

“The Fire Nation has destroyed everything in our path,” Katara explains, while the trailer cuts to Fire Lord Ozai and his two children, Prince Zuko (Dallas Liu) and Azula (Elizabeth Yu). “If the world is going to have any chance, it's going to need Aang.”

Cut to Aang zipping around to entertain the village’s children before smacking face-first into a rock sculpture.

“Right. There goes the savior of the world,” Sokka quips.

Back in the arctic, Prince Zuko declares to his Uncle Iroh that he’s deadset on capturing Aang.

“I’ve chased down every hint of the avatar,” he says, referring to the mischievous hero. “It’s my destiny.”

As the trailer shows off the powers of Fire Lord Ozai, who shoots a massive amount of fire at his opponent in a one-on-one duel, Aang expresses doubts about his abilities.

“I’m not someone who can stop the Fire Nation. I don't want the responsibility,” he says.

“You don’t have to do this alone,” Sokka says. “You have me, Katara and a flying ball of fur. What more do you need?”

While the next few brief scenes show a clash between Fire Nation soldiers and villagers, the narrator continues his advice to Aang.

“The world needs you, Aang,” he adds. “Remember what it is we’re really fighting for. The ones we love.”

Amid a scene of Aang dramatically using his wind powers to topple a group of soldiers on a bridge, Aang declares, “I’m the avatar, and I'm gonna save the world — with my friends.”

As the sweeping orchestral music crescendos, the trailer cuts to clashes throughout the show’s first season, including Aang’s skirmish with an old friend, King Bumi (Utkarsh Ambudkar).

In the trailer’s final moments, Aang, filled with energy rises off the ground — a hint at the power he’ll wield in the seasons to come — before cutting to the TV show’s title.
