Labour’s Andrew Gwynne has won the new Gorton and Denton seat at this year’s general election by a landslide.

Previously, Mr Gwynne represented the Denton and Reddish seat for Labour. He held that seat since 2010.

But he managed to replicate that support in the new Gorton and Denton constituency, as he secured 56.9 per cent of the vote share. It means that Labour won all six seats in Manchester, despite boundary changes resulting in parts of Rochdale, Oldham, Tameside, and Trafford having been added to its seats.

It forms part of the party’s landslide victory, with exit polls suggesting Keir Starmer will be the next Prime Minister with a majority of 170.

“We have a great chance to rebuild our country for all of us,” said Mr Gwynne in his acceptance speech. “It’s not going to be easy. This country is broken but the Labour government we have elected will rise up to that challenge.”

He added that he’d been convinced into parliament by his wife, who told him ‘if you go for your home seat and you get it, just think what you can do for the people you've grown up with’, and closed his speech by paying special thanks to Allison.

In second place was Reform’s Lee Moffitt, who secured 5,142 votes - 15.7pc.
