Gotham's final season kicked off on Thursday night (January 3) in the US in dramatic fashion as one major character lost their life before the end of the first episode.

Tabitha Galavan, played by Jessica Lucas, was killed by the Penguin / Oswald Cobblepot (Robin Lord Taylor) as she saw an opportunity to avenge the death of her boyfriend Butch Gilzean.

The Penguin's plans to scavenge supplies from a downed helicopter ahead of everybody else had been interrupted by Tabitha.

Tabitha pulled the trigger on the Penguin, but the gun misfired. The Penguin reacted by stabbing Tabitha in the chest.

"Say hi to Butch for me," he taunted.

Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie) eventually took all the supplies from the Penguin, angering the villain.

There are 11 episodes remaining, and the final season looks to continue the drama in next week's episode 'Trespassers'.

The description for episode 2 reads: "Gordon and Bullock investigate a location where several kids have been kidnapped. Barbara proves to be an unlikely ally to Gordon. Meanwhile, Bruce looks into an alleged witch with healing powers for Selina, and Nygma deals with demons of his own."

Executive producer John Stephens previously promised that the story of Gotham will come to a "satisfying end".

Gotham season 5 airs on Fox in the US. No release date has been announced for the UK yet.
