Grace Dent was hoping for 'special treatment' on Beat The Chasers
The MasterChef judge and food writer confessed she thought host Bradley Walsh would help her with the answers on the quiz show.
What did you miss?
Grace Dent confessed she thought she would get help with the answers on Beat The Chasers.
The MasterChef judge — who quit I'm A Celebrity when she took part in 2023 — took part in the new celebrity series of The Chase quiz show spin-off. And Dent, 50, told host Bradley Walsh to give her a hint at which was the correct multiple choice answer to choose.
The latest episode of Beat The Cahsers: Celebrity Special saw Dent, along with comedian and actor Stephen Mangan, sports TV presenter Sam Quek take on Chasers The Governess, The Beast, The Dark Destroyer, The Sinnerman, The Vixen and The Mennace to win money for the chosen charities.
And Dent learnt that despite it being a celebrity special for charity there was no bending the rules.
What, how, and why?
TV presenter and food writer Dent appeared on the quiz to raise money for The Youth Rock Project, helping youth clubs in Carlisle where she grew up.
Walsh asked her second question of the evening, which was: "What name is given to the effect where the house prices increase due their proximity to a supermarket?"
As she hesitated, Dent said to host Walsh: "You're not going to help at all are you? I honestly thought when I was going to be this close, you might do a bit of winking or something like that. You don't do that at all. You're very..." She gestured to show how blank his face is. Walsh told her: "It's a game show, not 'Let's Go Dating.'"
But Dent went on to take on Chasers The Sinnerman Paul Sinha, The Governess Anne Hegerty and The Beast Mark Labbett with 36 seconds on their clock in a bid to win £15,000 for her charity. And Dent did in fact beat the chasers with 15 seconds still on her clock. Time was up for The Chasers after Labbett incorrectly identified a firefly as an insect, when it is in fact a beetle.
She won a standing ovation from the Chasers and 'The Vixen' Jenny Ryan told her: "I think Grace played a terrific game in that she didn't see that head start as being the number of questions she could get wrong, she saw that as being able to take an extra second to think of the correct answer and throw a guess in. And you smashed it, well done!" Dent said: "I'm so happy!"
Viewers were impressed with her performance despite appearing nervous.
One wrote on social media platform X: "Huge well done to Masterchef critic Grace Dent who has won £15,000 for her chosen charity on tonight’s Celebrity #BeatTheChasers you’ve played brilliantly Grace!"
Another said: "Grace wins £15.000! Nice one. #BeatTheChasers" Many simply tweeted: "Well done Grace!"
And another posted: "I hope Grace Dent manages to win some money as she is very nervous #BeatTheChasers"
What else happened on Beat The Chasers?
Episodes star Mangan lost against the Chasers but was given £1,000 for his charity Parents In Need, helping parents of children with special needs. He risked taking on four Chasers with 45 seconds on their clock in a bid to win £50,000.
The celebrity contestant only wins if The Chasers clock runs out before their 60 seconds is up. Every time they answer a question right the time goes over to The Chasers. As Mangan left The Vixen commented: "Just a step too far for him I think. He should have gon one offer down. Best chance." The Chasers had 19 seconds remaining.
TV presenter Quek also lost, but was gifted £1,000 for the Tiny Stars Appeal on behalf of the Neonatal Unit at the Wirral University Hospital in Merseyside. And Olympic gymnast Nile Wilson also failed to Beat The Chasers, but was given £1,000 for The Millie Wright Children's Charity, helping children with life threatening conditions.
Beat The Chasers continues on ITV1 at 9pm on Wednesday 8 May.
