The Greater Manchester neighbourhoods where residents' lives are being made a misery by 'dangerous' parking

Stockport councillors are looking at ways to crack down on "dangerous" parking in some of the borough's neighbourhoods.

It comes after more than a thousand residents responded to a survey about parking issues in Bridge Hall, Cale Green, Edgeley, and Shaw Heath.

At a town hall meeting on April 18, councillors agreed to look into developing new schemes to address the problems.

Parking and traffic are contentious issues in the Edgeley area, which has a large number of terraced houses based around the stadium of Stockport County football club.

The team are based at Edgeley Park, which could be about to double its capacity in the coming years to around 18,000 people under new plans put forward by the club.

Residents in the area recently told the Local Democracy Reporting Service that parking can be a problem on match days, despite the parking permit scheme in place.

Edgeley is also set to face major traffic disruption in early 2025, when Network Rail starts work to replace two bridges which act as routes in and out of the area.

Alongside this, the council is planning to build thousands more homes around Stockport over the next few years, mostly on previously developed land.

Coun Matt Wynne, leader of the Edgeley Community Association on Stockport council, said that parts of Edgeley are being used as a "free car park" by workers involved in regeneration schemes.

Asa Caton, another ECA councillor, said the problems will get worse without a new plan to tackle parking issues.

He said: "We need to proceed with the package of proposals that will address not just dangerous but nuisance parking too.

"There are a number of critical projects planned for Edgeley over the next couple of years that are going to cause widespread disruption.

"Parking is the number one issue raised by residents and businesses when I speak with them. The parking issues will only get worse if we don't press ahead with solutions now.

"I think we can all agree that Edgeley's road network wasn't designed for the number of vehicles that it now has to serve.

"There's insufficient speed reduction measures, road surface damage, anti-social parking, nuisance and dangerous parking, commercial vehicles on residential streets. It's all adding to the daily driving misery for thousands of residents in Edgeley."

The ECA is calling to expand the match day parking zone in Edgeley as part of the proposals.

It also wants to create an 'Edgeley Residents Parking Zone', to help sort issues with day-time commuter parking, and parking issues linked to building work in the area.

Parking arrangements for traders could be reviewed under the plan, as well as the performance of parking enforcement measures.

Councillors agreed to seek funding for a feasibility study for the proposals.
