MEMBERS of a Greenock gym are set to put their fitness to the test this weekend to raise money in memory of a boy who passed away at the age of just 12.

Several teams from UrbanFit will travel to the Battle Cancer event at Oriam in Edinburgh tomorrow.

The 90-minute showdown sees groups of fitness fanatics from across Scotland attempt to reach 20,000 reps across five challenging stations.

Around 30 UrbanFit members are taking part to raise money for the Schiehallion ward at the Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow.

Every year, the ward treats more than 100 children for cancer and blood disorders.

The local competitors chose to gather donations in memory of brave Gourock boy Callum Tosh, who died in June 2020 after being diagnosed with renal cell carcinoma.

Callum was treated for three years before he passed away with his parents at his side.

His dad, Graeme, joined UrbanFit after the tragic loss to improve his health and state of mind.

Gym owner Andy Armour said: “We’re always doing something for charity. We all love fitness and it’s nice to do it for a good reason.

“Tosh is one of our members and he’s a great guy, so we wanted to raise money in memory of Callum.

“It makes all of this worthwhile.”

As well as their physical efforts on the day, the money raised by each team will count towards their total reps – with every pound counting as one rep.

Having raised £4,500 at the event last year, the teams hope to pull in plenty of donations again this time around.

Andy said: “You get points for doing as many reps as you can, but you also get points for the money you raise as well.

“You might be the fittest team there, but if you’ve not raised the money – you won’t get a podium finish.

“It’s a great way to raise money.”
