Former Olympian Greg Rutherford has issued a heartbreaking tribute following the death of his dog and 'best friend' Gus. The Dancing on Ice star revealed he was 'utterly heartbroken' after Gus lost his battle against cancer just days after being diagnosed.

Greg explained his family only had a short time to come to terms with the news. He explained how much his training partner and 'best mate' meant to him as he paid tribute on Instagram.

"I am utterly heartbroken. We’ve had a really tough week as a family finding out Gus had cancer. He sadly passed away last night and I just feel numb. Between the tears and pain of missing him so much, I’m longing to see his silly face or feel him rest his head on my feet or lap.

"Gus has been such an important part of our lives. For me he’s been my training partner and best mate. Every steps session, every run, every bike ride and walk. He was always with me.

"I’d talk out my plans to him like he understood and be greeted by a happy paw or lick and was always happy. They’re never just pets, they’re everything good."

His fans rushed to support the star. "So sorry to hear that, the pain is unbearable," Jojobaggins6 wrote.

"So sorry to hear this news xx," julie.davidson.735 commented. Hubbs781 echoed: "So sorry to hear this sad news! Massive hugs."

And rousseau added: "So bloody sorry to see this mate. He was such a character. Always to first to greet me on a visit. And a stalwart of the family. Rest well Gus."
