Grey's Anatomy season 21 spoilers follow.

Ellen Pompeo will be ramping up her appearances in Grey's Anatomy for season 21.

The actor exited Grey's Anatomy's main cast following season 19, though she made guest appearances last season and continued to narrate the show.

According to Variety, Pompeo is now in talks to star in at least seven episodes of the upcoming 21st season.

Pompeo could become a series regular once again on Grey's Anatomy depending on the final agreement, or at least appear nearly as much as long-time co-stars Chandra Wilson and James Pickens Jr.

Grey's Anatomy bosses have already agreed to a reduction in episodes produced for season 21 for budgetary reasons, meaning fans can expect 18 new episodes.

Grey's set up a major storyline for Dr Meredith Grey in the season 20 finale, where she defied her boss at the Catherine Fox Foundation by refusing to hand over her Alzheimer's research.

Meredith subsequently resigned from the Fox Foundation to publish her research independently, with Catherine (Debbie Allen) then threatening to fire several of her colleagues in retaliation.

Pompeo has more time to make frequent appearances in Grey's Anatomy this season because she is about to wrap filming on the upcoming Hulu true-crime drama Natalia.

There are lots of other changes afoot for Grey's Anatomy next season, including moving from its traditional 9pm time slot on ABC to a later 10pm start time.

Midori Francis (aka Mika Yasuda) and Jake Borelli (aka Dr Levi Schmitt) will both be departing as series regulars, but long-time cast members James Pickens Jr. (Dr Webber), Chandra Wilson (Dr Bailey) and Camilla Luddington (Dr Wilson) are all coming back.

Former Grey's Anatomy star Jason George is set to return as a series regular as Dr Ben Warren too following the cancellation of spinoff Station 19.

Grey's Anatomy season 21 will air this autumn on ABC in the US. Previous seasons are streaming on Disney+ in the UK.
