Grimsby Town are reported to be in talks to sign Icelandic international Jason Daði Svanþórsson, with the winger catching the club’s eye during a scouting mission in the region.

Sources from Iceland have reported that the 24-year-old is primed for a move abroad with his contract expiring at the end of the league season, with the Mariners stepping up their interest.

Discussions are ongoing between Town and Svanþórsson’s current club, Breiðablik, who he has registered seven goal involvements for in just 12 league appearances this term.

The player has interest from other clubs in Iceland who will want to prize him away at the end of his contract, but Grimsby will be looking for a quicker deal with a transfer fee likely the main point of contention between the two clubs currently.

Local outlet Futbolti.net asked Svanþórsson directly about the links, to which he gave an open-ended response. He said: "Nothing has been confirmed so I have nothing to say at the moment."

Jason was capped by his country for the first time in 2022 and has earned five in total since, with his performances in Iceland’s top division and Europe earning him recognition as one of the top attacking prospects in the country.

With 38 goals and 26 assists in 127 appearances for his current club, that gives the winger a goal involvement every two games on average, and a wide player that can produce that often is just what Grimsby need to level up next season.

The club made their intentions to shop outside of England when they could early on in the summer, and with David Artell having been out to scout players personally along with the club’s Head of Recruitment Joe Hutchinson, their search has unravelled a top talent.

Jason has appeared in Champions League and Europa League qualifiers as well as the main Europa Conference League competition, providing goal contributions at the highest level, so his signing could represent a major coup for a club at Town’s level.

The market Grimsby are searching in is not exploited by many clubs in the EFL, so there is an opportunity to get in for the best players before others see the potential and join in the pursuit.

It might be some time yet before any confirmation arrives if it is to happen with nothing agreed at this stage, but the initial leak will provide great excitement for Town fans regarding a potential deal.
