Group Stranded on Balcony Winched to Safety Amid Massive Flooding in Southeast Spain

A storm caused by a cold drop or Gota Fría has ravaged the east coast of Spain, causing record rainfall which has seen rivers break their banks and several people killed after they became trapped by flood waters.

Footage here shows a group of people on the upper balcony of a large house being winched to safety by Spain’s Military Emergencies Unit, Unidad Militar de Emergencias (UME).

At least five people have died as a result of storms along the eastern coast of Spain since September 12.

The deaths have occurred as far apart as Granada and Alicante, with the Alicante and Murcia regions being worse hit. El Pais reported that parts of those two regions received 90 litres of rainfall in an hour on September 13.

Laurence Cooper of the English-language Murcia Today news service said that the weather alert for Murcia had been reduced from red to yellow but that the risk of flooding from runoff remained. Credit: Unidad Militar de Emergencias via Storyful
