Director James Gunn earned a reputation for unique references to Marvel Comics lore with the original Guardians of the Galaxy, which snuck oddball cameos from Howard the Duck, Cosmo the Spacedog and Adam Warlock into a post-credit scene.

Now the film-maker has confirmed that there is a secret Marvel tribute tucked into Vol. 2, but he's going to let the fans themselves figure it out.

"I am not going to [reveal anything], but people have gotten very close," he told The Independent. "So, I don't think it will be very long until it comes out."

Luckily, there are a few Easter eggs that we can effectively rule out since they've already leaked ahead of the movie's release.

Gunn is probably not referring to the reunion of the pre-Star Lord Guardians of the Galaxy for one of movie's five post-credits scenes.

In that scene, Charlie-27 (Ving Rhames), Aleta Ogord (Michelle Yeoh), Stakar Ogord (Sylvester Stallone), Krugarr and Mainframe reform for one last hurrah.

We can also effectively rule out Miley Cyrus's vocal cameo as the armour-clad warrior Mainframe in that same sequence, since Gunn confirmed the singer's involvement to Digital Spy this week.

A follow-up to Adam Warlock's cameo in the first Guardians movie seems unlikely as well. Earlier in April, Gunn admitted to cutting several references to the character from Vol. 2.

Echoing Gunn's comments, we don't expect to wait long for an answer to this Easter Egg mystery, with the release of the sequel now only days away on both sides of the Atlantic.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 opens on the UK on Friday (April 28), and in the US on May 5. Watch Digital Spy speak with the cast below:
