Guardians of the Galaxy vol 3 spoilers follow.

Guardians of the Galaxy 3 stars Karen Gillan and Pom Klementieff have opened up on the reaction to the film's F-bomb.

The third film in the popular franchise was released in cinemas earlier this week and features the first official F-word in the MCU, during a comedic scene between Gillan's character Nebula and Chris Pratt's Peter Quill/Star-Lord.

Gillan told Collider that she didn't even notice the significance at the time, saying: "It's so funny that they would use it. It's it feels like a monumental thing and it is used in the most throwaway setting.

"I didn't notice that [Chris] said it until someone said, ‘Oh, that's the first F-bomb in MCU history,' and I was like, 'Really?'

"I didn't actually even hear it because, I guess, I'm Scottish and hear a lot of swearing all the time," she joked.

Pom Klementieff, who plays Mantis, added: "The thing is, also, why is it a thing in the first place? I mean, we both come from Europe too, so for me, it's like, I use this word all the time.

"You need a release, so it should be in the movies, too. It's great that it's [the F-bomb] in this movie. We're proud of it."

Guardians of the Galaxy 3 sees Star-Lord reunite with Gamora, Drax, Groot, Nebula and Rocket for one last hurrah, as they embark on a mission to take down new villain the High Evolutionary (Chukwudi Iwuji).

Director James Gunn recently reflected on the ending of the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy, telling Digital Spy and other media outlets he will "miss the characters".

"I'm gonna miss the characters," he said. "That's the saddest part for me. I really, truly love these characters. I love all of them. I think there's certain ones that I have a special fondness for, especially Rocket.

"I'm gonna see all these people again. They're all friends of mine. But I'm not gonna see the characters.

"I'm not gonna be writing the characters again, at least not in the near future. And so that's a real sadness, yeah."

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 is released in UK cinemas on May 3 and in US cinemas on May 5. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 1 and Vol 2 and The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special are streaming on Disney+.
