Guatemala’s Transition to Arévalo Government to Start Next Week

(Bloomberg) -- Guatemalan President Alejandro Giammattei will meet with President-elect Bernardo Arévalo’s team on Monday to start the transition of power, easing fears of institutional gridlock.

Giammattei said in a national address that the Secretary General of the Organization for American States, Luis Almagro, will participate in the meeting. The OAS will help oversee the entire transition and the new government will be sworn in on January 14, Giammattei said.

Arévalo, who has pledged to crack down on corruption, had his victory in the Aug. 20 election certified by the electoral authority on Monday.

He still faces challenges from the courts, however. Representatives of his Semilla party filed an appeal on Tuesday with the country’s electoral authority, seeking to overturn a provisional ruling on Monday that ordered the party’s suspension.
