Autumn in the UK begins this week as this year’s autumn equinox falls on Thursday September 22.

As the temperatures slowly drop and hot chocolates begin to sell out at supermarkets, now is often the time that the calendar comes out to get organised for the months ahead.

School holiday dates vary slightly each year, therefore many parents will be keen to check when their children are next off.

Here is everything you need to know about the upcoming October half-term.

When is the October half-term?

In England and Wales, the October half-term falls on the week commencing Monday October 24 and ends on Friday October 28.

This means pupils are expected to return to school on Monday, October 31.

The October half-term typically lasts a week, unlike the Christmas and Easter holidays, which are two weeks.

Occasionally, you might find your child’s school dates differ from the standard across England and Wales.

It’s best to double check term times by typing in the school postcode on the gov.uk website here, or by checking the school’s website for a copy of 2022/23 term dates.

There are a bunch of things parents can do in London during the half-term, including seeing the award-winning musical Lion King or family favourite Mary Poppins.

Alternatively, you can plan, shoot and edit a horror film at the BFI Southbank Masters of Suspense film-making workshop.

Kew Gardens is holding a Mexico Family Fiesta celebration of the Day of the Dead for families filled with activities, dance workshops and carnival parades from October 22 until October 31.

At the time of writing, Christmas is only 94 days away, which means schools don’t have a long time left until the Christmas holidays.

The Christmas break will begin on Friday December 16 for most UK schools.

Term times for Northern Ireland and Scotland are a little different. Check with your child’s school to confirm dates.
